City Seeks to Improve Local Welfare

The city of Berlin says it's got a local welfare problem.

Officials say they have seen their welfare budget grow every year for the past five.

And increasingly, Berlin says it's had to pick up the tab for other towns' downtrodden

New Hampshire Public Radio's Dan Gorenstein reports, the situation has gotten to the point where the city is calling for a change in state law.

An Eye for Art

Ophthalmic photography is the specialized field of taking picture of retinas. PJ Saine takes intimate pictures of eyes for both diagnostic and artist purposes. Recently, he started using his "eyes" as a medium to create "Retina Quilts". He joins John to talk about his work, his art, and his involvement with Orbis, an NGO that brings ophthalmic medical training to the developing world.

Laura's guest is Walter McDougal, professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania and author of "Freedom Just Around the Corner: A New American History 1585-1828" it's the first of a trilogy of books about the history of the United States of America.
