NH's Senators Vote for Iraq Progress Reports

By Julie Donnelly on Tuesday, November 15, 2005.

An overwhelming majority of US Senators have approved a non-binding measure to pressure the Bush administration to develop an exit strategy to end the war in Iraq.

Both New Hampshire Senators supported the amendment - but say it's important not to spell out a specific timeline for withdrawing troops.

NHPR correspondent Julie Donnelly reports from Washington.

Letters from the Battle Zone

By Shay Zeller on Tuesday, November 15, 2005.

Celia McLaughlin was a WWII Army nurse who left her 20 month old baby girl with family while she went to serve her country, in North Africa and Europe. Her daughter Pamela McLaughlin is now retired and has written a book "Celia, Army Nurse and Mother Remembered," a biography of her mother rich with letters her mother sent home during the war effort. We'll talk with Pam about those years and her mother's legacy.

Later in the show we'll check in with naturalist Iain MacLeod of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire. He'll tell us what animals are doing to prepare for winter, and he'll tell us about a killer songbird that's lurking in our midsts.

The New Medicare Prescription Drug Plan

By Laura Knoy on Tuesday, November 15, 2005.

Today marks the first day people eligible for Medicare can sign up for what is being called "Plan D", a federally administered program aimed at keeping the cost of prescription drugs affordable. In New Hampshire, private insurers are offering 41 different plans that Medicare beneficiaries can choose from, depending on the types of medication they take. But while proponents of the new plan are calling it a great cost-saver, others are saying it's so confusing even the professionals don't fully understand all the options. We'll take a closer look at Plan D and ask what challenges older folks are facing in picking the best option. Laura is joined by Bernie Cameron, director of the Medication Bridge Program, and Jack Hoadley, Research Professor at the Health Policy Institute at Georgetown University. We will also talk with Dr. Charlotte Yeh, Boston Regional Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
