Did Cluttered Streams Cause the Floods in Alstead?

By Mark Bevis on Monday, October 17, 2005.

In the piece you just heard, Walpole Representative Sheldon Sawyer said state regulations don't allow people to clean out their brooks and streams.

And that debris, he says, clogged culverts and waterways and caused last weeks flooding.

But at the Department of Environmental Services, Rene Pelletier doesn't see it that way.

Pelletier is the Deputy Director of the Water Division.

He tells NHPR's Mark Bevis that the Department of Transportation is reponsible for keeping the culverts clean

Shaking Down Shakespeare

By Shay Zeller on Monday, October 17, 2005.

We meet two members of the traveling Shenandoah Shakespeare Black Friars’ Stage Company. The troupe is highly regarded for their faithful, but vernacular approach to the Bard. Performing in street clothes and with very few props, they bring about drama in the simplest way…through Shakespeare's dialogue. They talk about their upcoming state-wide performances of Much Ado About Nothing and give an in-studio demonstration of Shakespeare at work.

Here are their New Hampshire performance dates:

Thursday, October 20 -- Lebanon Opera House, 7:30

Friday, October 21 -- Concord City Auditorium, 7:30

Saturday, October 22-- Newport Opera House 2:00, 7:30

All tickets are available through the Lebanon Opera House.

By Laura Knoy on Monday, October 17, 2005.

With floods first in the Gulf Coast and now in the Northeast and New Hampshire, an uncomfortable reality is emerging- many homeowners in risky areas don't purchase this kind of coverage...and those that do are often surprised at how little it helps them rebuild and recover. Laura's guests are Adam Scales, A Visiting Professor of Insurance Law at the University of Connecticut and Chair of the Association of American Law Schools on Insurance Law. Howard Kunreuther, Professor of Decision Sciences and Business and Public Policy and Co-Director of the Risk Management and Decision Processes Center at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania Robert Sevigny, New Hampshire Insurance Commissioner and Dan Gorenstein, Reporter for New Hampshire Public Radio.
