The Exchange Coverage: Flooding in Southwest New Hampshire
New Hampshire's Spring Floods: Before "Mud Season," there could be "Flood Season." New Hampshire officials say they’re concerned about the huge snowpack we have this year. And with all that snow and ice, heavy spring rains could have nowhere to go but into our streets and our basements. We’ll look at what the state has learned from past flood events, how this year's conditions are different, and what preparations are already underway. Lynch's Education Amendment/Flood Debrief: Governor John Lynch's proposed education amendment has passed its first test...with Senate approval last week. But now the House chimes in and it gets much trickier. We'll weigh its political prospects and whether this one-hundred-and-three word amendment will have a major impact on New Hampshire's long debate over paying for public schools. Alstead Remembered: It was one year ago that the Cold River sent a wave of water through the town, destroying roads, bridges and homes and taking the lives of four people. We'll talk to members of the Alstead community and see where they are in terms of rebuilding, remembering and moving forward. Flood Aid: With a record rainstorm behind us, many Granite Staters are mopping up, drying off and assessing the damage and are coming to discover that their insurance doesn’t cover what they thought it did. We’ll look at what private insurance can and can’t do, how federal aid may play into the equation and how flood victims will start to put the pieces back together again. The Realities After the Rain: The worst might be over, and the sun may even peak through but this week’s soaking in New Hampshire continues to affect the state... physically, environmentally, economically and emotionally. Today on the Exchange, we’ll talk to Granite Staters deep in the deluge of rainwater and get an update as efforts continue to clean up the state. MORE...

Front Porch Coverage: Flooding in Southwest New Hampshire
Soul Savers in the Big Easy: Tonight on the Front Porch, we're marking the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's devastating impact on New Orleans with a special documentary. Soul Savers in The Big Easy is the powerful story of the rescue efforts of three members of a civilian rescue team that became known as the "Soul Patrol". During their twelve days on the flood-waters of New Orleans's seventh ward, Rick Mathieu, Earl Barthe and Jadell Beard rescued more than 500 people out of houses and off of rooftops bringing them to safer areas for evacuation. Tonight they tell the story of their challenging and sometimes heart-breaking rescue attempts. Tracking Storm Runoff: The image of storm drains being cleared across New Hampshire has be prevalent during the past week. We're going to look at what exactly is heading down into those drains and what the effects on water quality are. We'll also look at a new field report that tracks stormwater runoff, and explore state-of-the-art technologies used to improve coastal water systems. Trusting the Government: The recent floods in New Hampshire continue to try the patience and budgets of many towns across the state. We'll look at the balance between trust and mistrust in the government when a crisis occurs, and what kinds of events take place that can result in the scales tipping. We'll also review some of the moments in American history when citizens' trust was sorely breached. Our guests are Michael Dupre, Professor of Sociology at St. Anselm College, and Paul Gronke, Associate professor and Chair of Political Science at Reed College in Portland, Oregon.
The Flood's Effects From A-Z: State Climatologist David Brown of the New Hampshire State Climate Office says the current weather system ranks among the top five New Hampshire storms historically. We'll talk with him about the effects, records, and trends related to the current flood conditions. We'll also talk with Louis Josephson, President and CEO of
Riverbend Community Mental Health about how long periods of gray and rain can take a mental toll on humans. And, we'll check in with Steve Webber, the Chief of Wildlife at New Hampshire Fish and Game about the impact on the state's wildlife population. Putting the Floods in Perspective: This weekend's rains caused lots of damage and displaced lots of people throughout southwestern and central New Hampshire. We'll talk with State Climatologist David Brown about how it all fits into broader weather patterns, and how the state has dealt with destructive storms throughout history. MORE...
