Survey Examines Public Views On SchoolsBy Jon Greenberg on Thursday, July 15, 2004.The Education Testing Service, the firm behind the SAT's, the GRE's and many other entrance exams, recently asked Americans about public schools and money. It's the fourth year that ETS has commissioned a team of Democratic and Republican pollsters to see where the public stands on key questions of education policy. In light of this year's presidential race, the survey paid particular attention to attitudes in the so-called purple states states that could just as easily go either to President Bush or Democrat John Kerry. As NHPR's Jon Greenberg reports, the results offer a cautionary note to both candidates. A Voice of Her OwnBy John Walters on Thursday, July 15, 2004.If there is something going on in the Seacoast region, chances are Deidre Randall is involved. She is a book publicist, an organizer for the Prescott Park Folk Festival and Writers in the Round, a weekly collaborative performance between poets and songwriters. But beyond her work as an organizer and promoter, she is also a musician and poet in her own right. On her new CD, Passport, Deidre explores the edgier side of folk music. Her CD release party will be held at the newly refurbished Stone Church in Newmarket, on August 6th. She will also perform at the Prescott Park Folk Festival, to be held this Sunday from 10-4. Athletes DopingBy Laura Knoy on Thursday, July 15, 2004.As the Olympic Track and Field trials got underway last week, the biggest story was not about who's breaking records, but who's using illegal drugs. Seven of the sports athletes, including some of the most famous, like Marion Jones, are under suspicion for doping and some observers say its threatening to put a bad name on the entire sport. But track and field is not the only sport where big-time athletes are believed to be using performance enhancing drugs. We'll talk about just how widespread doping is and how the authorities are changing the way they crack down. Laura's guests are Dr. John Hoberman, professor at the University of Texas and author of several books on sports and doping and Vin Sylvia, deputy managing editor for sports at the Union Leader. We will also talk with Brian Cazeneuve, Olympic writer for Sports Illustrated. |
