The Color Purple

By Laura Knoy on Thursday, July 1, 2004.

In this year's national election, New Hampshire is considered one of a dozen or so "purple" states? not too red (Republican) or too blue (Democratic). And many believe that these purple states or swing state or battleground states will be the keys to winning the oval office. We'll look at New Hampshire's purple status, identify where the blue, red and purple towns and cities are, look at how changes in population and demographics are altering the state's Democratic and Republican parties, and see how much New Hampshire's "purpleness" will play out in this year's national and state elections. Laura's guests are Dante Scala, Associate Professor of Politics at Saint Anselm Collegeand author of "Stormy Weather: The New Hampshire Primary and Presidential Politics"; James Pindell, Managing editor and Political Reporter for PoliticsNH.com, New Hampshire's on-line political network; and Andy Smith, Professor of Politics and Director of the UNH Survey Center.
