NH Cool to Maine's Health Insurance Experiment

The architects of Maine's Dirigo program would like to see two numbers come down - the cost of insurance and the number of people who have no insurance at all. Rising premiums and uninsurance are large problems in New Hampshire as well. But as NHPR's Jon Greenberg reports, in the Granite State, there is no great hunger for the Dirigo approach.

Maine's New Health Insurance Program--Dirigo

An innovative health insurance plan is taking shape in Maine.

It's called Dirigo, the state motto meaning "I lead."

Under the plan, state, employer and worker contributions will combine with federal Medicaid funds to help provide low-cost health insurance.

Backers, including Governor John Baldacci, say it will eventually ensure that every Maine resident has coverage.

Maine Public Radio's Fred Bever reports.
