The Prison Economy

Across the country, struggling rural communities are building prisons to replace jobs in farming and manufacturing. The paper mill town, Berlin, is following that road. We'll discuss why towns are turning to prisons to create new jobs and just how well it can help local economies.

Dr. Seuss Turns 100

Massachusetts-born Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, would be one hundred this year if he were still alive. We'll look at the legacy of the author and artist and see what impact he had on American culture and literature. Mike Arnold hosts. His guest is Philip Nel, Assistant Professor of English at Kansas State University and author of "Dr. Seuss: American Icon". We'll also hear from Richard Minear, Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, one of the country's leading historians on Japan during WWII and author of "Dr. Seuss goes to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theodor Seuss Geisel."

Ralph Nader Joins the Race

Ralph Nader is throwing his hat into the Presidential race as an Independent candidate. He made the announcement over the weekend on Tim Russert's "Meet the Press". Nader campaigned in 2000 as the Green Party candidate. He nearly upset Bush in Florida and many view him as the spoiler that helped Al Gore lose the election. Mike's guest is Linda Fowler, Director of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center at Dartmouth College. We'll also hear from Andy Smith, Director of the UNH Survey Center; Pam Walsh, Press Secretary for the New Hampshire Democratic Party, and Jayne Millerick, Chairperson for the New Hampshire Republican State Committee.

Concealed Weapons Bill

A new bill in the legislature would allow New Hampshire residents to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. It passed the Senate by a narrow margin and now moves to the House. Some say it makes us safer, others disagree. Mike Arnold hosts. His guests are Senator Joe Foster, a Democrat representing Nashua and a lawyer, and Senator Bob Boyce, a Republican representing Alton Bay and co-sponsor of the bill.

Homeless in New Hampshire

We'll discuss who New Hampshire's population is, where they're found and what makes it such a difficult problem to crack. Mike Arnold guest hosts. His guests are Preston Heller, photographer and documentarian from Wilton, who recently made the documentary "Home Before Winter" with his son Caleb Heller, and Elliot Berry, Director of the Homeless Advocacy Project at New Hampshire Legal Assistance.

We'll look at the biology of hope, its connection to mind/body healing and whether it really can cure disease. Laura's guest is Dr. Jerome Groopman, Chief of Experimental Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Groopman is also a staff writer in medicine and biology for The New Yorker.

Bad Astronomy (REBROADCAST)

Laura's guests are Dr. Phil Plait, Program Manager at NASA Education and Public Outreach at Sonoma State University in California. Phil also runs the "badastronomy.com" website where he tries to separate science fact from science fiction that shows up in our culture. And, John Gianforte, who teaches astronomy at the College for Lifelong Learning. He is also co-founder of the Astronomical Society of Northern New England. John also writes an astronomy column for Foster's Daily Democrat called "Scanning the Heavens."
