AES Will Back Away $300M Power Plant

The owners of a brand new 300 million dollar power plant in Londonderry have cut their losses and plan to give up their investment. Low revenues have led the AES Corporation to start the process to turn the plant over to its creditors. New Hampshire Public Radio’s Jon Greenberg spoke with Greg Smith, a lawyer for the AES Corporation. Smith says AES will continue to operate the plant and there will be no disruption in service.

Civil Wars: A Battle for Gay Marriage

In December 1999, the Vermont Supreme Court ordered the state legislature to extend the equal rights and responsibilities of marriage enjoyed by heterosexual couples to same-sex couples. The battle that ensued is described in the new book, Civil Wars, by David Moats. David writes editorials for the Rutland Herald and won a Pulitzer Prize for his editorials on the civil union issue.

Real World Learning and Standards for Schools

Every eight years, the State Board of Education reevaluates the minimum standards for public schools. This year, the reassessment is part of Governor Craig Benson's Comprehensive Education Reform plans. And the proposed changes to the minimum standards are on the fast track - and scheduled to go into effect this October. New Hampshire Public Radio's Raquel Maria Dillon reports.
