600 VT National Guard Mobilized

By Kevin Forrest on Friday, November 19, 2004.

The largest deployment ever of Vermont National Guard troops is scheduled for later today.

Executive Council Lacks Ethical Oversight

By Dan Gorenstein on Friday, November 19, 2004.

On Monday the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee is scheduled to meet to decide whether to continue its investigation of House Speaker Gene Chandler.

Chandler has been accused of violating ethics guidelines by taking gifts of more than $250.

The Attorney General is also investigating the House Speaker for not reporting tens of thousands of dollars worth of gifts.

But Chandler isn't the only elected official to raise large sums and not report it.

Executive Councilor Ruth Griffin failed to fully report about 80 thousand dollars she has raised and used for personal uses.

But as New Hampshire Public Radio's Dan Gorenstein reports, unlike for legislators, there are no comparable ethical guidelines that govern executive councilors.

Bring in the Reserves!

The National Guard and the reserves have played a prominent role in the war in Iraq since the beginning and now make up more than 40% of the forces there. The recent attacks on Fallujah have claimed more reservist lives. We'll look at the role of the reserves and what that means for the future. Laura's guests are Bill Martel, Professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval War College in Rhode Island, and Allan Stam, Professor of Government at Dartmouth College. Stam is also a former captain in the Army Reserves and former member of the Special Forces.
