Center Advises Lawmakers to Think Long Term

By Mark Bevis on Tuesday, May 6, 2003.

A NEW STUDY ADVISES LAWMAKERS TO LOOK TO THE LONG TERM WHEN DEBATING NEW BILLS ON EDUCATION FUNDING.

THE HOUSE HAS PASSED LEGISLATION THAT WOULD CAP THE RISE IN EDUCATION COSTS…AND EVENTUALLY PHASE OUT THE STATEWIDE PROPERTY TAX.

THOSE BILLS ARE CURRENTLY BEFORE THE STATE SENATE.

THE STUDY’S AUTHORS SAY THE NEW LEGISLATION WON’T MAKE MUCH DIFFERENCE IN EDUCATION FUNDING IN 2 OR 3 YEARS.

BUT 5 TO 10 YEARS DOWN THE LINE, LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS COULD SEE THEIR COSTS SKYROCKET.

RICK MINARD IS THE CO-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE NEW HAMPSHIRE CENTER FOR PUBLIC POLICY STUDIES.

HE DESCRIBED THE RESULTS OF HIS RESEARCH TO NHPR’S MARK BEVIS..
