Senate Education Committee Guts Bill

The state senate’s education committee has endorsed the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The committee yesterday eliminated provisions in a house bill that would have allowed municipalities to opt out of the new federal education guidelines.

A Spill Drill

Two weeks ago, a barge headed for a power plant on Buzzards' Bay ran aground on some rocks. Four million gallons of number six fuel oil spilled and tarballs washed ashore all along the South Coast of Massachusetts.
Something similar could happend in the Pisquataqua River, where barges unload their cargo into gigantic heating oil storage tanks.
But a group of oil and energy companies say they are prepared to contain a spill and protect Portsmouth's Great Bay estuary. NHPR's Raquel Maria Dillon has more.

Hiker Safety

Every year lots of people get lost or injured hiking in New Hampshire, endangering themselves and sometimes rescue teams too. We?ll look at statewide efforts to better educate hikers on safety, including a new program being rolled out this month. Laura's guests are Rebecca Oreskes, Recreation and Wilderness Leader for White Mountain National Forest, and Lt. Dan Bogardus, Leader of the Specialized Search and Rescue Team for NH Fish and Game.
