ArchivesCommittee Recommends Privatizing PrisonsBy David Darman on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.A commission looking to improve state government efficiency is expected to release its report on New Hampshire’s corrections system today. Yesterday, the union representing prison employees criticized the report. They say it recommends privatizing some or all of the state’s prisons. New Hampshire Public Radio’s David Darman has more. Deja VuBy Eric Woolson on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean and his campaign are naturally making a big deal about former Vice President Al Gore's endorsement today. They probably don't remember 1988 and they certainly might wish everyone else would forget. Unfortunately for them, we haven't. Al Gore made a few forays into Iowa in 1987, billing himself as a "raging moderate." That's right, a raging moderate. I remember it well because I was still a political reporter back then and Gore, then a U.S. Senator from Tennessee, sat in the Holiday Inn in downtown Waterloo, Iowa, and made the case for why Democrats should nominate a real honest-to-goodness middle-of-the-roader like him to serve as the Democrat standardbearer. When Gore's campaign failed to gain any traction in Iowa, he made a big fuss about the state having too much influence in the process and then abandoned our caucuses in favor of a Southern strategy. A Sampling of my Friends' ViewsBy Rosalyn Middleton on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.Meighan is a 28 year old Black mother of two who is back in school trying to reach her version of the American dream. She stated "I was for Dean until the confederate flag incident. It made me take a closer look at his whole platform and it left me wondering. Not so much the flag but his plans in general." Her husband hasn't shared any of his thoughts about the candidates, yet. But she is going to do some real hard looking at their records as soon as the semester ends and she can spend more time ferreting out the truth. Then she will "make up her mind. I am not impressed with Kerry and I still want to believe in Dean." Gore for Dean & debate nightBy James Farrell on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.How long before Al Gore does his first Howard Dean commercial? The Gore endorsement announced today is framed by the media here as a blow to Joe Lieberman, the former Gore running mate. But John Kerry's campaign must feel things slipping away as well. Former Governor Jeanne Shaheen, and her husband Bill, were major Gore backers in 2000. Several key Shaheen staffers are onboard the Kerry bandwagon, and recently Shaheen herself endorsed the Massachusetts Senator. But now Al Gore is backing Dean, and it is no longer a sure thing that Shaheen can deliver even her own core supporters in the NH Democratic establishment to the Massachusetts senator (if she ever could). Presidential EconomyBy Laura Knoy on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.Every four years, presidential hopefuls start weighing in on the nation's economy. This year, as the economy lagged, the democratic candidates had plenty of ammunition. But recent reports show things are looking up. Still, voters in New Hampshire say the economy is the top issue for them. Our guests take a closer look at what the candidates are saying on the stump and how their economic policies differ. We'll find out what these proposals would mean in the real world. Laura is joined by Dean Spiliotes, visiting scholar at the Institute for Politics at St. Anselm College and Matt Slaughter, Associate Professor of Business Administration at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. We'll also hear from Andy Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. A Life in Alternative RockBy John Walters on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.Gary Smith is a producer, manager and promoter. For almost 20 years, he was a key figure in the Boston music scene. Then he got out of the big city and moved to a farm in Walpole, New Hampshire. His business is across the border in Bellows Falls, Vermont. He'd like to see the town become a destination for music and the arts. AG: Benson Volunteers are State OfficialsBy Josh Rogers on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.The New Hampshire Attorney General's office says two people who've done state work for Governor Craig Benson but who have never been on the state payroll are legally state officials. The AG's ruling shields some of their work from public scrutiny. But at the same time, raises more questions about the Governor's reliance on volunteer staff. Gore for DeanBy Raquel Maria Dillon on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.With a major debate this evening in Durham, New Hampshire politicos were long expecting political news to break. But former Vice President Al Gore's endorsement of Howard Dean today was a surprise. New Hampshire Public Radio's Raquel Maria Dillon has more. |
