Catching Some Rays

By Ted Jastrzembski on Monday, December 22, 2003.

Last week it was Saddam, this week it's code Orange. The press legitimately swings its searchlights to track the new, new thing. Its hard on Democratic challengers trying to catch a few rays. You don't even need to be very cynical to foretell how impossible it will be for the Democratic candidate to gain anything like parity in working the press. This last couple of weeks have definitely heightened my appreciation for the grasp the Bush administration has over the hearts of most Americans.

"Ya gotta be a football hero"

By James Farrell on Monday, December 22, 2003.

Wes Clark is a patriot. I doubt even his Democratic opponents would dispute that claim. Yet not since the laughable 1992 Bob Kerrey (of Nebraska, not John of Massachusetts) ice-rink ad, has there been such an obvious effort by a presidential candidate to pander to voters with sports metaphors and local iconography.

If you missed it (and I have reason to think many folks outside New England did), during the New England Patriots' Saturday night match against the "J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets" we were treated to presidential candidate Wesley Clark discussing the need for a strong "defense" (with the accent on the "de") and appealing to our eternal longing for "a heck of a quarterback." True, there was Wes Clark dressed in a New England Patriots sweatshirt, telling us that "deep down, we're all Patriots" (which should come as a shock to Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins fans, among others).

Home State Record: Wesley Clark

By Dan Gorenstein on Monday, December 22, 2003.

Here in New Hampshire, voters can get a close look at the presidential candidates.

But what voters see is largely what the candidates want them to see.

New Hampshire Public Radio has joined up with 8 other public radio stations to produce a series called the Home State Record.

This week and next, reporters talk to people who knew these candidates before they came to New Hampshire.

Today in our series we look at General Wesley Clark.

He's never held elective office, never voted on a legislative measure and never signed a bill into law.

But NHPR's Dan Gorenstein reports on Clark's record in the military and even before.
