On the streets where I live

By Pat Barss on Monday, October 6, 2003.

On the streets where I live every day there is something new and exciting happening involving the upcoming primary. Not sure who said it but it is oh so true - that if you have not at least shaken the hand of one Democratic candidate for president it is only because you have not wanted to!

Labor Day is always an exciting weekend for me during election season, especially with my boyfriend being a Teamster official. I get to attend breakfasts, parades and cookouts where all the candidates are struggling to charm Teamster officials. Now that the National Brotherhood of Teamsters has come out and endorsed Gephardt I have been limited to events involving this very pro-labor candidate. I attended one of 75 House party's being run simultaneously which provided Gephardt the opportunity to speak to hundreds in several different states at one time via satelite television!

Relief for Rural Hospitals Could be Coming

By Judith Smelser on Monday, October 6, 2003.

Congress is working on legislation that would better reimburse New Hampshire's rural hospitals for treating Medicare patients.

Medicare currently reimburses rural health care providers at a lower rate than their counterparts in urban areas.

But provisions in the medicare prescription drug bill currently in conference committee would give rural providers some relief.

NHPR's Washington Correspondent Judith Smelser reports.
