A Dis for Iowa

By Ted Jastrzembski on Friday, October 24, 2003.

So Lieberman and Clark are going to bypass the battle in Iowa, and save their powder for NH. My NH techy friends seem pretty blase' about the whole thing but acknowledge that it is kind of a dis for Iowa. I've heard Gephardt, who's been there, done that, has got Iowa pretty much wired. It probably makes sense for the late-coming warrior, Clark, but people feel its not a show of confidence for Joe--he did afterall win the popular vote for VP.

Two more handshakes

By Beth Todgham on Friday, October 24, 2003.

I had the opportunity to hear two more of the candidates speak this week. An organization called the Every Child Matters Education Fund is holding a series of forums and has invited each candidate to come and answer questions relating to children and families. Each of the candidates will be asked the same six questions by the head of the Every Child Matters organizations and the political reporter from WMUR tv.

Maine Voters Face Casino Referendum

By Susan Chisholm on Friday, October 24, 2003.

The welcome sign to the state of Maine includes the slogan: "The Way Life Should Be."

But this Fall Mainers are divided over whether life as they know it should include thousands of slot machines and a $650 million dollar resort casino.

For years, voters in the Pine Tree State have resisted temptations to allow an expansion of gambling.

But as Correspondent Susan Chisholm reports...this year the lure of jobs is a powerful incentive.

Gifted Kids

By Laura Knoy on Friday, October 24, 2003.

You may think these kids and their parents are the lucky ones, but that's not always the case; gifted children are often bored in school, and as a result, may get into trouble, or even drop out, wasting tremendous potential. Laura's guests are Michelle Munson, newly elected President of the NH Association for Gifted Children. She also works in the Hampton Public Schools as an elementary curriculum coordinator, and Dr. Jim Webb, clinical psychologist and consultant, specializing in the social and emotional needs of gifted and talented children.

Lebanon to Shaw's: You're no Butson's

By Josh Rogers on Friday, October 24, 2003.

Shaw's supermarkets and the city of Lebanon are at loggerheads after Shaw's closed Lebanon's only downtown grocery store. Until recently, the store had been owned by a small regional chain called Butson's. The Lebanon city council voted to boycott Shaw's and some local residents are angry at what they see as Shaw's heavy-handed attitude.

NHPR's Josh Rogers has more.

How To Get A 950 Lb. Moose Out Of The Woods

By Raquel Maria Dillon on Friday, October 24, 2003.

Big game hunting in New Hampshire is a privilege and a challenge. More than 14-thousand hunters applied for only 485 permits this year. Once the lucky permitees kill a moose, they still have to pull the animal out of the woods. Since the average New Hampshire moose weighs 950 pounds, that task is a showcase for good old Yankee ingenuity and resourcefulness. New Hampshire Public Radio?s Raquel Maria Dillon visited Fish and Game?s Berlin moose check station on Opening Day and brought back this report.
