Whither AMTRAK? NH Congressmen Divided

The Northeast is breathing a sigh of relief as the prospect of an Independence Day Amtrak shutdown has disappeared.

The Bush Administration and Amtrak officials have cut a deal to help the financially strapped rail system through September.

But a solution to Amtrak's financial woes could pit the Northeast against other parts of the country, and appears to have divided New Hampshire's delegation.

NHPR's Washington correspondent Don Rush has this report.

Has Redistricting Changed Any Senate Races

Politicians aren't the only people looking over New Hampshire's new Senate districts.

Political scientists, like Dante Scala at St. Anselm College in Manchester have been following the process closely.

And as Scala tells NHPR's Mark Bevis, it's easy to see why both sides are relatively satisfied with the Supreme Court's decision.

Supreme Court Redistricts State Senate

The New Hampshire supreme court has redrawn the state?s 24 senate districts?..The precedent setting action breaks more than a year of partisan gridlock..... The court also ordered that all Senate candidate file to run by July 5th?. Both democrats and republicans say the will mount their election efforts confident their party got the better end of the deal.

The Stone Church Is Still Up For Sale

For 35 years, a converted church in Newmarket has had almost legendary status among touring musicians. The Stone Church Music Club has also served as a favorite performance space for local artists. Last September, the owners announced they were selling the building, and today the future of the venue is still uncertain. Correspondent Pierce Woodward reports.

Do "Secondary" Towns Know About I93 Project?

This week and next, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation plans to hold informational meetings about the widening of Interstate 93 between Massachusetts and Manchester. The first meeting is scheduled in Manchester this afternoon. But five state-wide conservation groups are concerned that people in communities who may be most impacted by the project won?t find out about the meetings. So they?re trying to get the word out themselves. NHPR?s Doug MacPherson reports.

State Centralizes Drivers License Policy

All non-U.S. citizens living in New Hampshire who want a drivers license must go to the Concord Division of Motor Vehicles. As of September 1st, 2001, that became the Department of Safety's policy. Critics say it's discriminatory. While state officials admit the policy is inconvenient, they don't question its legality. They argue the policy improves DMV services, and may increase homeland security. NHPR's Dan Gorenstein reports.

Key Bush Advisor Addresses NH Republicans

GOP Candidates for Governor Squabble Over Spending

Issues Defined for the Next WMNF Plan

This weekend, officials at the White Mountain National Forest are scheduled to outline three key categories of issues that will guide the development of the next forest plan. The plan will direct the forest?s management for at least a decade. The planning process is now about twenty-five percent done, but the hardest work may lie ahead. NHPR?s Doug MacPherson reports.
