North Country Economy

A shut down at Pulp and Paper of America's pulp mill and a partial closing of the paper mill has many North Country residents concerned about the future of the region's economy. Berlin Mayor Bob D'Anderson says he'd like to diversify by bringing in a federal prison and gambling. We'll talk about these ideas and the overall impact of mill troubles. A Modern Writer Tries to Preserve the Past

Nicholson Baker is known for controversial novels like ?Vox? and ?The Fermata.? But these days, he?s battling to save old paper. He says major libraries are destroying part of our history, by replacing old books and newspapers, with microfilm. He?s saved some old papers in a warehouse in Rollinsford, and he?s written a book, Double Fold, about his fight.

A new town park in Hillsboro and a brick for Tom Joad

Paper Mills in Berlin and Gorham Still Shut Down

Several of the machines at Pulp and Paper of America plants in Berlin and Gorham remain idle this week, while its parent company tries to work out its financial problems. The company's troubles show no sign of ending, however. NHPR's David Darman has more.
