New Environmental Contracts Could Save MoneyBy Dan Gorenstein on Thursday, July 5, 2001.The Department of Environmental Services is evaluating a pilot program that changes the way contractors are paid to clean up polluted sites. Rather than a pay-as-you-go process, this new method would pay contractors as they reached milestones throughout the project. Two months ago, Marin Environmental began cleaning up diesel and gasoline spills in West Canaan. Marin hydrologist, Ron Miller, works at the Vermont office. The Green Mountain state has already implemented the pay-for-performance approach, and Miller tells NHPR's Dan Gorenstein the benefits far outweigh the risks. listen: No audio currently available.
