Sex Education & the Surgeon General's Report

Surgeon General David Satcher’s new call to action on sexual health is raising hackles among critics. They say his sex-ed guidelines put too much emphasis on contraception and don't stress abstinence enough. We’ll talk about about what this means for sex-ed in schools. Judiciary Bemoans Court Security Budget Cuts

When the legislature passed the biennial budget two weeks ago, it cut 1.8 million dollars earmarked for security at New Hampshire’s thirty-nine district courts. While lawmakers defend the cut as prudent fiscal policy, court officials say it could prove disastrous….not only for the 33 full-time workers who could lose their jobs……but also for the citizens they serve. NHPR’s Josh Rogers has more.

The Education of Laura Bridgman

Ernest Freeburg is a professor of humanities at Colby Sawyer College in New London. His new book is "The Education of Laura Bridgman" (Harvard University Press). Laura Bridgman was deaf and blind from the age of 2, and became a celebrity when she as taught to communicate with language by Dr. Samuel Howe. Freeburg explores not only Bridgman's own story, but the public debate that developed around her.

171,000 Acres of NH Land: FOR SALE

A large portion of northern New Hampshire is up for sale. International paper today announced plans to sell more than 170-thousand acres of forest lands that comprise the northern tip of the state. The announcement throws into question the future of the North Country's timber-based economy.

The Manchester Civic Center Is No More

It's not even opened yet, and its name has already changed.

From now on, the Manchester Civic Center will be called the Verizon Wireless Arena.

The company is paying millions for the privilege... and the advertising options.

Arena general manager Tim Bechert described the arrangement to NHPR's Mark Bevis.
