NH's Main Streets face tough competition from the likes of big box stores and malls. But, there are successful ways to keep traditional downtowns thriving. We'll look at what it takes to attract retailers, how to entice people to spend more time and money in the heart of their community, and how e-commerce fits in. Laura talks with Kennedy Smith, Director of the National Main Street Center. .

A Journey Into Inner and Outer Landscapes

Terry Osborne teaches English and Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College. His book "Sightlines" is published by the University Press of New England; it combines his explorations of the Upper Valley, where he's lived for 12 years, and his struggle with chronic depression. He talks about both subjects, and the relationship between these "inner" and "outer" landscapes.

Senate Votes Down Mandatory Civics Class

The New Hampshire Senate today killed a plan to make a semester of civics a graduation requirement in state high schools. The vote, which essentially split on party lines, came after a lively floor debate that revisited the familiar ideological split of state mandates versus local control.
