Whitman was inspired to pursue the project after the death of his teenaged son, and he talks about how the CD can play a role in the grieving process. ?Before Their Time? is also the name of non-profit organization, which uses the money generated from sales of the CD to support hospice and suicide-prevention groups in the Upper Valley.
