Landfill Fight Raises Basic Issue of Local Control

The town of Bethlehem and Casella Waste Systems have a case before the NH Supreme Court. Casella, a private landfill company which owns 87 acres of land in Bethlehem, argues that only state government can rule on how much property can be used for landfill. The town argues that zoning regulations changed in 1987 and the landfill cannot grow beyond 20 acres. The case is expected to take several months.

Judicial Conduct Committee to See Changes

The task force charged with reviewing the operations of the Judicial Conduct Committee has issued its report. Among its recommendations: the Committee should be re-established as more independent from the court system, with its own staff and budget; and appointees to the Committee should no longer come solely from Supreme Court recommendations, but should be chosen by a group including the NH Bar Association, the Legislature and the Supreme Court.

Clinton the Speechmaker

UNH professor Mari Tonn talks to John Walters about President Clinton's oratory style. Both his famous 1992 Dover, NH speech and his return talk there today reflect Clinton's ability to identify with the people in his speechmaking, says Tonn.
