ArchivesLow-Powered FM Stations To Hit the Air WavesBy Nathan Irwin on Wednesday, January 10, 2001.The FCC has approved 255 low-powered non-profit radio station licenses nationwide. Five of these are in N.H. Low-powered stations have a 100-watt transmitter, reaching a 3-10 mile radius, and are part of the FCC's new program to foster greater public access to the air waves. Commercial broadcasters and National Public Radio vigorously opposed the new plan. New stations may begin broadcasting on January 21 of this year. listen: No audio currently available.
